Course Overview

This 6-week course introduces absolute beginners to crochet through a series of relaxing and creative projects. Students will learn foundational stitches, how to work in straight lines and rounds, and how to shape and combine stitches to make beautiful finished items.

The course culminates in a colourful African Flower Coaster project, a perfect introduction to pattern reading and motif work that students can easily expand into blankets, cushions, or table décor in the future.

Lessons are every week, Practising between lesson's is key to being able to move onto the next week's lesson.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: April, Thursday 16th, 2026

Topic: Getting Started with Crochet
Focus Skills:

  • Holding the hook and yarn comfortably
  • Understanding yarn weights, fibres & hook sizes
  • Making a slip knot
  • Creating a foundation chain
  • Learning the single crochet (sc) stitch
  • Working evenly in straight rows

Mini Project:
Start a dishcloth worked in rows using single crochet.

Homework:
Continue practicing your dishcloth, focusing on even stitches and straight edges.

Lesson 2: April, Thursday 23rd 2026

Topic: Expanding Your Stitches
Focus Skills:

  • Review: chaining and single crochet
  • Learn half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc)
  • Understanding stitch height and texture
  • Combining stitches in rows
  • Reading simple row instructions

Mini Project:
Finish your dishcloth with a stripe pattern using sc, hdc, and dc.

Homework:
Finish your dishcloth and bring it to the next class.

Lesson 3: April, Thursday 30th 2026

Topic: Working in the Round – Circles & Increases
Focus Skills:

  • Working in rounds vs. rows
  • Magic circle (adjustable ring)
  • Joining rounds with slip stitch
  • Increasing evenly to create flat circles
  • Counting rounds and stitches

Mini Project:
Crochet circular face scrubbies or coasters using single crochet in the round.

Homework:
Make multiple round scrubbies to practice consistent tension and increasing.

Lesson 4: May, Thursday 7th 2026

Topic: Pattern Reading & African Flower Coaster Introduction
Focus Skills:

  • Understanding written crochet patterns and abbreviations
  • Recognising pattern repeats
  • Combining multiple stitches (sc, hdc, dc)
  • Colour changes between rounds

In-Class Activity:
Guided walkthrough of the African Flower Coaster pattern (each round step-by-step).

Homework:
Start your African Flower Coaster at home using the printed pattern handout.

Lesson 5: May, Thursday 14th 2026

Topic: Practicing the African Flower Coaster
Focus Skills:

  • Working from a pattern independently
  • Managing yarn colour changes
  • Troubleshooting stitch placement and counting
  • Finishing rounds neatly

In-Class Project:
Work through your African Flower Coaster with instructor support.

Homework:
Finish your coaster and bring it to the next class for final touches and joining practice.

Lesson 6: May, Thursday 21st 2026

Topic: Finishing Techniques & Creative Variations
Focus Skills:

  • Fixing common mistakes
  • Fastening off and weaving in ends neatly
  • Blocking for shape and smoothness
  • Joining motifs with a darning needle
  • Exploring creative uses for the African Flower motif

In-Class Activity:
Finish and block your African Flower Coaster.
Demonstration: how to join motifs to make a larger set (placemats, table runner, cushions etc.)
